No Excuses! The Power of SelfDiscipline [Hardcover] Brian Tracy Author Books
One of my favorite movie scenes is when Al Pacino is dressing down the faculty at the Baird School in "Scent of a Woman" when he tells of the many times he has come to the crossroads in his life. He says he always knew what was the right thing to do but never did it because it was just too hard. Too many people go through life just like the Colonel. That's why books like NO EXCUSES: THE POWER OF SELF DISCIPLINE, by Brian Tracy are necessary. As the introduction states, "Your ability to think, plan and work hard in the short term and to discipline yourself to do what is right and necessary before you do what is fun and easy is the key to creating a wonderful future for yourself." Just like the Colonel, we know the right things to do, but often choose an easier route. This is why self discipline is the key ingredient needed to break the habit of mediocrity.
All of Brian Tracy's books are well worth reading, and I have to put this one in the top two or three. Here Tracy explores self discipline and how its' refinement and application benefit so many aspects of life. This is self discipline as it applies to everything from money to relationships; goal setting to problem solving.
The book is broken into three main parts, Self Discipline and Personal Success; Self Discipline and Business, Sales and Finances; and finally Self Discipline and The Good Life. Each part has 7 related chapters. Each chapter concludes with Action Exercises.
You won't have much success getting where you want to be in life without a big dose of self discipline. This book will help show you the way; how to build it, and how to apply it.

No Excuses! The Power of SelfDiscipline [Hardcover] Brian Tracy Author Books Reviews
I listen to the CD on my 45 minute drive to and from work. I've tried to appy the principles I've learnd from listening and have found that my productivity at work and sales have increased. I'm listening to it a second time and will purchase more once I've digested this CD a little more. I want to glean every thing I can before ordering more so I will have a good foundation to grow and improve my skills every day.
There are some good tips and a useful focus on self-discipline. The chapter on happiness will stick with me. Bear in mind, this isn’t really a “formula” to live by. If you employ all of the advice for all areas of your life, you run out of hours in the day. Quite literally…..he suggests an extra 3 hours a day working….10 full hours in the office. Plus 1 hour of reading or self-education in your field each day. With regard to your health 8 solid hours of rest and 1 hour of physical activity. That’s already 20 hours a day. That doesn’t leave much time for grooming, commuting, eating, errands, chores or tending to his later chapters related to relationships. Troubling since he says that children measure how much they are loved and valued by how much time you spend with them…..hmmmm.
All that aside, the points are valid, those who pursue life with purpose and intention will find success wherever they may seek it.
So – my assessment of the book is good. And it's a good reminder that no one ever became great at something without hard work and self-denial.
I admit it. I have procrastinated over the writing of this book Life, as John Lennon reminded us, is what happens when people are making other plans.
This was recommended to my by a District manager of a large retail company who asked me to tell him my opinion as she was thinking of recommending it to her store managers.
To be honest, as I started reading it I was more than a little put off by the author and his style. It soon became clear to me that I was very familiar with a lot of the material from my training in the Franklin Covey techniques and the work of Steven Covey The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Powerful Lessons in Personal Change but I persisted by way of a detour of the other works of Brian Tracy with an amusing description of the totality of his output as saying the same thing repeatedly but in a different guise.
The first half of the book, I found off putting and I became of the opinion that this book is not for everybody and not everybody reading it would find it beneficial.. Certainly it is useful for those who sell but this is not a general self help book and while I admire his concentration on goals, perseverance and self discipline, many people have lives where they have little control over their work environment and where their personal lives are messy to say the least.
The second half of the book should have been the major part of the book and is much more positive. I suspect that Brian Tracy has not had much contact with the hourly paid worker who is unable to just go into work an hour earlier or stay later due to Corporations' insistence on employees not working more than forty hours as that would attract time and a half under Federal Law.
All in all, this tome is another example of a buckshot approach rather than directed to the audience who would most benefit from it.
I do not consider the book itself useful in a general retail environment although parts of it such as time management certainly are, but is ultimately directed at sales personnel.
