It "could have been" a pretty good novel. The situations of the protagonist and the co-protagonist, although not very probable, are not impossible. The narration itself is quite good as well as is the structure of the tale. The characters could have been developed more completely but they are consistent and coherent. Where does the novel fail? There is a limit to how much situations can be stretched before they become implausible, impossible or just plain ridiculous. There is a bit too much stretching, too many coincidences, and a few things that are just off the wall. The prelude to the ending, in which protagonists and antagonists are all united under one roof, is a three ring circus, just absurd. The escape of the hero and his sweetheart would put James Bond to shame. Good writing requires not only narrative talent but narrative control and this story gets out of control. Too bad. It could have been a pretty good novel.Product details

While I enjoyed this suspenseful story, I was very distracted by the many errors
Jesse became Jessie and back and forth;
40-ton semi became 10-ton semi;
Brent and Trent Razer became Razor.
And there was also a less-than-great grasp of English grammar/punctuation

Wish I could give this four stars, but I can't.
'On The Black' pulled me in from the first page. I had a hard time putting the book down. Once I started reading, I could feel my heart rate spike and the adrenaline flow. I felt like I was living the entire story as it played out. Full of action, suspense, mystery, deceit, awesome technology and extremely thrilling. Rice was a very bad-ass lead. He's resourceful, quick witted, able to adapt quickly to any situation and one hell of a ally to have on your side. Jimmy and Grace were a huge asset to have. They both had mad skills. Addie was a riot. She's been through hell, yet she still hasn't given up. I loved her tenacity. She's quite brave in my opinion. She is also very resourceful and uses her abilities to her advantage no matter what the situation is. Britt surprised me. She turned out to be smart, loyal and creative. This book was a great read. A must add to your tbr list. I look forward to reading more.
TC Has written a novel about the CIA Agrent who had worked outside the countries was being chased by a CIA hit team and A Mafia murder squad. He manages to escape with the help of a young woman who was escaping from the FBI Witness line. Cutting their travels the young woman disappears when hr met another woman he really liked. The two of them begin to like each other. They then began to share his nightmare together.
This is an excellent read for the genre.....ER
Some of my best (and worst) impulse buys come from "review stalking"..paging through the reviews of reviewers I respect. This is hit-or-miss as choosing products by dartboard. Its rendered some real treasures, and a few duds.
This wasn't totally a dud, but it didn't live up to its promise. With any page turner (both for the writer and the reader) a key decision is whether readers will be asked to suspend disbelief, and by how much. Each of us has a different standard; standards may also differ by genre suspension of disbelief (to me at least) is much more acceptable in science fiction than in espionage writing, which I expect to be as realistic as the writer can convey.
For hybrid espionage/thriller writing, my standard is still pretty high, and grounded in reality; and this book didn't cut it. The author had a good premise and an interesting character, but asked readers to suspend their disbelief in a pretty major way about a third into the book with the introduction of a plot device that is the epitome of "deus ex machina", and it just didn't get better or recover. If I want an action hero who is impervious to injury or capture I'll stick with comic books.
Lots of action, older man, younger woman, both showing themselves capable of surviving against all sorts of more or less improbable odds.
I can suspend my liking for a bit of logic in a tale when the devices in the plot are great fun, and it is clear that this is a story, not a putative slice of real life. It could be made into a film, reminiscent of The Expendables, with bikes, planes, explosions, the fantastic James Bond like trailer, though perhaps I'd leave out the Hercule Poirot like gathering of suspects , before the film ends in a save-my-woman final bit of drama.
This is a thriller, one man against a rich powerful enemy, but the violence, while mentioned to let us know the character of some of the adversaries, is not dwelled upon. Sexuality is only a passing theme as it were, and no, the main protagonist does not end up in bed with the young girl, he has better moral standards. The main characters survive, of course; but I found myself wanting to know more about the circumstances round Wilson and the phone call, but not questioning Grace's loyal idiocy and miraculous survival.
I don't really understand all of the five star reviews.
While this is a fun, no brainer, read, it really tests the reader's ability to put the credulity aside. The protagonist, Burroughs Rice, has been in hiding for ten years. Yet, he has an 18 wheeler stashed and it's ready to go when his hideout is discovered. It's explained that he bought it from a down on his luck trucker. Okay. Then a bit later during one of the highway chases this truck has kevlar tires (bullet proof) and bullet proof glass on the side windows.
Usual cast of bad guys. Retired CIA chief who is as nefarious as they come. A couple of operatives under contract to the retired guy to find Rice. A motorcycle gang that supposedly puts the Hell's Angels to shame.
You get the idea.
As I said it is a fun read, but it certainly is not something that anyone who likes CIA thrillers should waste their time with.
